The different leathers of Santoni shoes. 

The leather that Santoni uses for its shoes is hand selected by the founder of Santoni: Andrea Santoni. During this selection process, the leather is carefully examined. Since Santoni has very strict requirements on the quality that the leather must meet, the leather is even studied with the help of a magnifying glass. Santoni shoes consist of 3 types of calfskin:

1. Calfskin of Santoni shoes

The first type of leather that Santoni uses for shoes is calfskin. The calfskin leather comes from the young calves that are up to one and a half years old. It is characterized by its softness and fine grain. This ensures that the leather is supple and has a fine structure. In addition, calfskin is also durable. Calfskin is extremely suitable for making santoni sneakers.  

2. Heifer leather of Santoni shoes

This commonly used leather at the Santoni brand comes from a heifer. A heifer is a calf that is a year and a half to 2 years old. These heifers have spent a summer season walking in the beautiful alpine pasture at altitude in the mountains of Switzerland and Italy and Austria. During these beautiful summer months, the daytime temperatures can sometimes reach around 30 degrees. Because of the altitude in the mountains, the temperature at night can also easily drop back to about 5 degrees below zero. Due to these large temperature fluctuations, the structure of the skin of calves can develop enormously. Moreover, the skin is still flexible enough to make the classic Santoni shoes.

Because these heifers graze naturally in the mountains and are not fed concentrates, the skin can grow evenly. When a heifer is fed concentrates, the skin will grow explosively, which is not good for the skin. Another advantage is that these heifers are not bothered by barbed wire or pests and insects in the mountains. This can prevent swelling and inflammation. So when the skins of these heifers are undamaged, the whole skin can be used for making Santoni shoes.

3. Rovesciato Suède of Santoni shoes

The third type of calfskin is the rovesciato suede, which is literally the translation of turned leather. The skin of a cow is about 1 cm thick and consists of layers. These layers are broken down into 4 layers with the top layer being the best layer. De schoenen waar het bij Santoni allemaal mee begon. Na jaren gewerkt te hebben voor iemand anders besloot Andrea Santoni in de jaren ´70 een eigen atelier te openen. In zijn atelier produceerde Santoni de klassieke Santoni veterschoenen en loafers. Deze schoenen werden alleen gemaakt met het beste kwaliteit leer van Pink Kalveren. De modellen zijn door de jaren heen natuurlijk iets veranderd, maar de Santoni Massimo en de Santoni Ciro hebben veel weg van de schoenen uit de begindagen.

Santoni sneakers

De Santoni sneakers werden pas veel later geïntroduceerd. Toen zoon Giuseppe Santoni het bedrijf van zijn vader Andrea in de jaren ´90 overnam, zag hij het belang van informele nette schoenen in. Who is founder Andrea Santoni?

After nearly 20 years of shoe making experience, Andrea Santoni decided to open his own workshop in 1975 to produce top quality luxury men’s shoes, inspired by the philosophy of Italian craftsmanship. From a small workshop at the beginning, to a large company with almost 500 employees.

Andrea Santoni is a man who remains in contact with his master shoemakers to this day, who have since taken over most of Andrea Santoni’s work. Andrea believes in the philosophy of keeping everything “under one roof”, in order to guarantee quality and perfection, and to transfer the authentic techniques of the most experienced craftsmen to the younger shoemakers.

Changing of the guard

Born in 1968, Giuseppe Santoni was still a child when his father Andrea founded the company. At a very young age, he started traveling the world to accompany the international expansion of the brand. He successfully opened new markets in Japan, China, Northern Europe and Russia to make Santoni one of the top names in Italian classic luxury shoes.

Around 2013, Giuseppe Santoni took over the company from his father. As CEO of Santoni, he focuses on further expanding the brand and preserving traditional values, combined with a healthy drive for innovation.

2. Special shoe polish with beeswax

Beesway you might think? That’s right. Santoni shoe polish contains beeswax and is even an important part. Thanks to the beeswax, your Santoni shoes will keep their shine. With a special emulsifier, the fats and acids of the beeswax are mixed with the water, so that no separation will take place. It is important to rub the beeswax evenly over the shoe. Let your shoes rest for a while so that everything dries well and then polish it.

Depending on how often you wear the shoes, it is advisable to brush them every month with special shoe polish. If you do not wear them every day, you can also do this every other month.

3. Shoe trees

Shoe trees are sometimes forgotten but are very important in the maintenance of shoes. Thanks to these tensioners, the Santoni shoe retains its shape.

The best time to put tensioners in your shoes is just after you have worn them. The shoes are then warm and slightly damp. 5. Use a shoelace
